Relax & Ride the Casa de Campo Park

Green tour of Madrid’s biggest park

Why this tour?

If you like nature, The Madrid Segway Tour 90 is the perfect route for you. Take your Segway and roll with us to visit what is known as Madrid´s green lung. La Casa de Campo is a natural park located to the west of Madrid that is a natural paradise right next the urban area. Its roads, lakes, recreational parks or just the historic landmarks, the Casa de Campo Park will delight all those interested in combining history with nature.

The tour begins in Plaza de España, a large square with gardens in the center of Madrid. From this meeting point we roll to our first destination: El Túnel Bonaparte. José Bonaparte I, brother of the famous Napoleon Bonaparte and king of Spain in 1808, decided to build an access from the Palacio Real to the La Casa de Campo Park. Designed by the architect Juan de Villanueva, the tunnel is the path we use to get to our next stop: La Ermita de la Virgen Del Puerto.

The hermitage, made in baroque architectonic style, was built by Pedro de Ribera under the command of the Marqués de Vadillo, who intended to beautify the surroundings of the Alcázar. The hermitage hosted a famous Virgin Mary statue that was destroyed along with the rest of the hermitage during the Spanish civil war. After the war it was restored and became part of the project Madrid Rio, an architectonic complex next to the Manzanares River composed by parks, concert halls and sports facilities that were initially designed to host the Madrid Olympic Games.

The next stop for the Madrid Segway Tour 90 is El Puente de Segovia, the oldest bridge in Madrid. It measures 172 meters long and is dated from the 14th century, although it got reformed after 1561 when Madrid was declared capital of the kingdom by Felipe II. Since then it´s been reformed several times until it was totally destroyed in the Spanish civil war to avoid the advance of Franco’s troops. After the war it was rebuilt and today it is one of the most beaten paths in the whole city.

What else will you see?

The Madrid Segway Tour 90 continues at La Casa de Campo Park, the largest natural area in the city. This historical park is located to the west of Madrid and is full of slopes, small hills, valleys and streams that converge in the Manzanares River. The La Casa de Campo Park is five times larger than New York’s Central Park and nearly 7 times larger than London’s Hyde Park. It was the Spanish crown property until the government of the second Republic, when it was transferred to the Madrid Town Hall. In its premises we find an amusement park, a zoo, the Madrid Arena musical pavilion, the IFEMA fairground and the Madrid Cable Car.

The tour take us through the La Casa de Campo Lake until arriving at El Parque de Atracciones, the Madrid amusement park, inaugurated by Carlos Arias Navarro in 1959. In this stop we enjoy one of its best known attractions: La Tarántula (The Spider). This spectacular roller coaster is more than 25 meters high and 700 meters long and only for the bravest. We also find another attraction only suitable for those who don´t suffer from vertigo, as is the Teleférico de Madrid (Madrid Cable Car).

We will leave the park to re-enter the urban area through El Puente del Rey, another bridge that give access from the Casa de Campo Park to the Royal Palace. Then we are greeted by La Puerta de San Vicente, a replica of the door that has existed in that place for many centuries. It was also the Marques de Vadillo who build it in 1726. The door was demolished until in 1990 the town hall decided to build a replica. From there we return to the starting point.
